Shade grown tobacco used to be a big business in the Connecticut valley. Travel back in time on the Virtual New Haven railroad and you will find many tobacco barns and shaded fields along the tracks, where the leaves for wrapping many fine cigars came from.
A first in-game screenshot (legacy mode) of the Springfield Union Station. The model is still a work in progress, as is most of downtown. We based this model on the old Victorian station building, which got torn down in the first half of the 20th century to make way for a bigger -- and much less fancy -- new station building. Back in our modeling time frame, three railroads served this station: the Boston & Albany (New York Central system), the Boston & Maine, and the New Haven.
The NH squeezed a lot of railroad yard onto the limited space available between downtown Springfield and the bank of the Connecticut river. That resulted not only in a pretty fascinating track layout but also this peculiar "cut off" roundhouse.
